Communicating vessels
Hand sculpted blown glass with collages, mix technique
Currently she make project about the mutual relations of four women in a generational chain, about creating bonds, motherhood, devotion, passing, sacrifice. Love in the family community or maybe the lack of it and longing for it… The family is a system of communicating vessels. Everything that happens to one of its members affects the others, and each new system is based on at least two others. She was created collages using fragments of photos from the family album and a delicate material such as glass. She referring to the fragility of life - the hypersensitivity of each of they, grandmother, mother and daughter.

„POWIDOKI” / „AFTER-IMAGES”

Everything will come in handy
Moving smoothly from commenting on the current global reality to private narration, the artist ventures to carry out a very private and sentimental project. Kalina’s grandmother is its main protagonist, as well as the deep, bittersweet relationship with her, resulting from the aforementioned condition – compulsive hoarding. The artist’s guide in her childhood and adolescence, who introduced her to the world of nature, carelessness and sense of here and now, so desirable today, stimulates her to analyse her creative process, make an attempt to restrain the accumulation of thoughts, artistic strategies and currently employed forms of expression.

solo exhibition 29.01. – 24.04.2021
SIC! BWA Wrocław Kościuszki Square 9-10
The issue of compulsive accumulation, or pathological hoarding, scientifically known as syllogomania, is the main narrative axis of Kalina Bańka’s upcoming exhibition Everything Will Come in Handy. It will be a story of an endless number of collected objects, ephemeral matter of the physical world and psychosocial instability.

We are a consumer society, we acquire more than we need, and cannot understand that by buying less we own more. Things begin to own us, whereas it is us who should be their owners. I turns attenion to enviromental degradation caused by industry and excessive consumerism fuels by the world of advertising, social media, fashion and trends. The objects presented on the floor formally resemble empty colourful containers remaining after previously consumed products. The laboriously prepared and gaudy forms change their original function. The useless packages, devoid of their content, themselves become objects of interest, drawing attention and forming a set of unique glass objets d’art.

Someone will put up a notice, someone else will tear it of, and then someone will write and glue something on it. Rain, snow, sun, make everything look fuzzy, faded, less and less conspicuous. Those kind of objects are most often created by coincident and random people. For me those very objects - perishing from the city landscape, covered with rust, torn posters, information, inscriptions or scratches, create a starting point and a base for projects which I later use in my work with glass

ase, Cristal glass, 2018

The perfection of the crystal glass mass has been disturbed by the addition of lead oxides before blowing a hot mass of glass into a wooden mold. These components play an important role in the melting of crystal glass, thanks to which it is clear, shiny and effectively splits light. The combination of hot melt glass with lead oxides at the last stage - blowing the glass into a wooden mold gave the possibility to create on the vases unique "ornaments" that distorted the perception of perfectly transparent crystal glass.

Everything Will Come in Handy
The issue of compulsive accumulation, or pathological hoarding, scientifically known as syllogomania, is the main narrative axis of Kalina Bańka’s upcoming exhibition Everything Will Come in Handy. It will be a story of an endless number of collected objects, ephemeral matter of the physical world and psychosocial instability.
However, every change is a process requiring time and determination. Old habits die hard, they are often compulsive and addictive. The artist’s long-established creative process has been subjected to experimentation. The results will soon be seen at Wrocław’s SIC! BWA gallery.

Part of PhD work "Between emptiness and accumulation" 2020
